Italy ranks among the 8 most industrialized countries in the world. Italy has over 90 institutes of higher education, with 47 state universities, several private universities, and 20 institutions dedicated to physical education. Every major city of Italy has at least one or more universities which have branches located in smaller towns as well. Italy also houses the University of Bologna which is the world’s oldest and most reputed institution in the country. Italy was one of the 4 countries to first implement the Bologna Process, a higher education reform that is now being implemented throughout Europe. The country has a rich history and tradition of higher education, which makes Italy a very attractive option for international students.

Understanding Education in Italy

Higher education is controlled by the Ministry for Universities. Universities are organized into faculties for different teaching subjects and departments, which are in charge of research. Italy has 89 universities, which are divided into several categories:

  1. State universities: These are state-funded public universities that comprise most of the universities in Italy, particularly the larger universities.
  2. Other publicly funded universities: Funded by a particular Province rather than the State
  3. Private universities: Non-State funded
  4. Superior Graduate Schools (Scuola Superiore Universitaria): These are independent institutions that offer advanced training and research courses specializing in postgraduate studies.

Work And Study in Italy

Italian laws permit a student to a minimum of work 4 hours a day and a maximum of 20 hours a week. Paid Internships are possible in rare cases.

You will need a student visa to study in Italy. Visa applications should be sent to your nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate. Visa procedures are subject to change, so it is worthwhile to contact the Italian Embassy for information to confirm current visa requirements. Here is a list of documents required for Italy:

  • Attested copies of X, XII & Graduate Degree (if applicable), Mark Sheets including Backlogs (Re-sits)
  • Evidence of English Language proficiency e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, etc.
